5 Most Popular Body Contouring and Skin Tightening Procedures

Body contouring and skin-tightening procedures are two sectors of the medical spa market that have grown in popularity. The face, neck, and arms continue to be the most popular areas for body contouring, but tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) and thigh lifts (thigh-plasty) are also gaining traction. Many patients decide to visit a skin treatment spa for a combination of procedures involving both the abdomen and the thighs - because they see results from multiple procedures done at once with one recovery time. Here are the most popular procedures:

Liposuction

Liposuction removes the fatty tissue by suctioning it out through a hollow instrument called a cannula, inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. It usually involves general anesthesia but may be performed under local anesthesia if only small amounts of fat are removed from large areas, such as inner thighs or underarms. When there is more substantial adipose tissue to remove, tumescent liposuction (under tumescent anesthesia) allows for more targeted removal by using a fluid to "float" and dissolve the fat before it is removed, then aspirating this emulsified mixture. Liposuction is most effective when large volumes of fat are removed from one site (i.e., one treatment session). The resulting contour may be smoother, but the results do not last as long.

Endermologie

Endermologie uses a specialized device with rotating rubber cups to massage away cellulite deposits. The gentle rolling motion stimulates collagen production and helps contract skin tissue, thereby creating a slimmer silhouette. This non-invasive procedure is painless and usually requires no downtime - some patients report feeling slightly sore post-treatment. It's also safe for most skin types, making it the perfect adjunct treatment for skin-tightening procedures.

Mesotherapy

The procedure involves the injection of natural ingredients such as amino acids, green tea extract, vitamins B6, C and E, minerals, and antioxidants. Therapists diuretics directly inject such ingredients into the skin through a fine needle to stimulate collagen production, burn fat cells, redistribute fluids and reduce cellulite. It is used for cellulite reduction, stretch marks, contouring of areas, including hips, thighs, buttocks, face lifting, tightening of jaw line and hands. The treatments may be done individually or in packages depending on the patient's desired results.

Radiofrequency

This procedure uses radio waves or microwaves that penetrate deep beneath the inner layers of the skin to heat subcutaneous fat deposits for controlled destruction with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. When this happens, it creates tiny tunnels which coax fatty deposits toward the dermal layer for removal by liposuction. Results are immediate following each session but may need a few sessions to achieve desired results for stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.

Chemical Peels

The skin is made up of three layers - the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Therapists use it on acne scars, uneven pigmentation, and fine lines. Skin peels are a medical procedure that applies an acid solution to burn off layers of skin through chemical means. That is done by applying a solution with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or trichloroacetic acid on an area that causes the topmost layer of skin to peel away. The new skin underneath heals quickly, creating a refreshed, smooth layer of skin.
